ihavespentthepasttwentyyearssearchingforanswerstothesequestions.myworkhasbeentohelpteamsofleadersetogetherfromacrossagivensocialsystemtoaddressaparticularchallengethatallofthemwanttoresolvebutthatnoneofthemcanresolvealone.myrolehasbeenasadesigner,facilitator,andorganizerofthesepracticalsocialchangeprojects.ihaveimmersedmyselfintheseinitiatives,andatthesametimehavepaidattentiontowhatwashappeningaroundandinsideme.
ihavehadtheprivilegeofworkinginthisway,alongsidemycolleagues,withallkindsofteams,onallsortsofchallenges,inallpartsoftheworld.wehaveworkedintheunitedstates,tomakecitieshealthierandrelivable;incanada,eleratetheshifttoalow-carboneconomy;incolombia,tocreateequitabledevelopmentamidcontinuedpolarization;inguatemala,ordsthatendedthecivilwar;acrosseuropeandtheamericas,tomakefoodsupplychainsresustainable;inisrael,todealwithwideningculturalandideologicalschisms;insouthafrica,toaddresscriticaldevelopmentalissuesinthetransitionfromapartheid;inindia,toreducechildmalnutrition;inthephilippines,tounblockapoliticalstalemate;andinaustralia,toeffectlong-delayedreconciliationbetweenaboriginalandnonaboriginalpeople.
theseexperienceshavegivenmeanup-frontviewofthedynamicsofsocialchangeatmanylevels:individual,group,munity,society.ihavebeenamemberoftensofdiverseteams;workingtogetherovernthsandyears;engagingheads,hearts,andhands.ihavehadtheopportunitytoparticipateinmuchtrialandmucherrorandmuchlearning.ihaveworkedsidebysidewithremarkablechangeagents,socialentrepreneurs,andactivists,andbeenabletoobserve,frombothoutsiderandinsiderperspectives,whatworksandwhatdoesn''''t.basedonthesefirsthandexperiences,ihavewrittenthisbooktosharewhatihavelearnedwithotherswhoaretryingtocreatesocialchange.
overthesetwentyyears,ihavemadetwodiscoveries.ireportedthefirstonefiveyearsagoinsolvingtoughproblems:anopenwayoftalking,listening,andcreanewrealities.inthatbookiconc露dedthatthekeytocreanewsocialrealitiesistoopenourselvesupandconnect:toourowntrueselves,tooneanother,andtoourcontextandwhatitdemandsofus.
fiveyearsandmanyexperienceslater,icanseethatthisconc露sionwasright,butonlyhalfright,anddangerouslyso.
powerandlovepicksupwheresolvingtoughproblemsleftoffandreportstheseconddiscovery.inordertoaddressourtoughestchallenges,wemustindeedconnect,butthisisnotenough:wemustalsogrow.inotherwords,wemustexercisebothlove(thedrivetounity)andpower(thedrivetoself-realization).ifwechooseeitherloveorpower,wewillgetstuckinre-creaexisrealities,orworse.ifwewanttocreatenewandbetterrealities-athome,atwork,inourmunities,intheworld-weneedtolearnhowtointegrateourloveandourpower.
